THE STUDY OF CLINICAL, LABORATORY CHARACTERISTICS AND TREATMENT RESULTS OF HAND, FOOT, MOUTH DISEASE CAUSED BY ENTEROVIRUS 71 AT CANTHO CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL IN 2019-2020

Abstract

  Background: Hand, foot, mouth disease (HFMD) is a viral infection. It is very contagious that spreads by person-to-person contact and easily causes epidemic.  The disease can cause many dangerous complications such as meningitis, myocarditis, and acute pulmonary edema leading to death if it is not detected early and managed promptly. Objectives: Describing clinical and subclinical characteristics of HFMD, the percentage of children had PCR test was positive for EV71, determining treatment results and related factors of disease and treatment methods at Can Tho children’s hospital in 2019-2020. Materials and methods:A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 206 patients diagnosed with HFMD. All data was collected by questionaires. SPSS 18.0 software was used for analyzing data. Results: The percentage of children hospitalized with fever was 92.7%; 91.3% of them had rash and blisters on hands. The figure of children had low hemoglobin count was 34.5%. The rate of high platelet count and white blood cell was 25.2% and 22.8%, respectively. Among 206 patients, 17% were positive for EV71. Conclusion: Most children with hand, foot and mouth disease when hospitalized have signs of fever and rash. Some factors associated with PCR results include HFMD classification, fever status, and platelet count (p<0,05). 100% of patients were cured.
