Abstract

  Background: Major physiological, surgical, and immunodeficiency changes during the pregnancy are risk factors in the epidemiological profile of vaginitis. Objectives: Determining the rate of vaginitis in the pregnancy due to common causes: fungi, bacteria, and caused by Trichomonas vaginalis; survey of some factors related to vaginitis in pregnancy; evaluating treatment results. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study with 149 pregnant women at the second trimester. Results: The rate of pregnancy vaginitis caused by 3 common factors was 38.3%, of which bacterial vaginosis accounted for 16,8% and Candida albicans rated 21.3%; hygiene habits after urinating and academic level were related to the incidence of vaginitis during pregnancy; vaginitis treatment was 86% effective in identifying the causative agent. Conclusions: Need to promote primary health care and equip additional means to detect vaginitis in periodic antenatal check-ups at the grassroots level.
