STUDY ON HYPERURICEMIA AND ITS RELATED FACTORS AMONG THE ELDERLY WITH PRIMARY HYPERTENSION AT CAN THO CENTRAL GENERAL HOSPITAL IN 2020-2021

Abstract
Background: Hyperuricemia is associated with an increased cardiovascular risk including the risk of developing hypertension. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of hyperuricemia and its average concentration of serum uric acid among the elderly with primary hypertension and its related factors. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study performed on 143 patients at the Can Tho Central General Hospital from May 2020 to February 2021. Participants were interviewed with the structured questionnaire, physical examination and paraclinical test of serum uric acid and lipid profile. Results: The hyperuricemia rate of subjects was 42% with average concentration of 538.5±132.6µmol/L, including 26.6% of mild increased level and 15.4% of moderate increased level. There were more likely being hyperuricemia in male compared to female (OR=1.4, p=0.28), aged over 80 years old (OR=1.49, p=0.37), smoking and alcohol drinking (OR=2.1, p=0.13). Similarly, the prevalence of hyperuricemia was higher in patients with problems regarding metabolic syndromes (overweight, central obesity, dyslipidemia, stage III of hypertension) with OR>1 and p>0.05. Conclusions: 42% of the elderly with primary hypertension increased the level of serum uric acid with mean concentration of 538.5±132.6µmol/L. There were no significant relationships between hyperuricemia status and some factors including age, gender, stage of hypertension, medical history (smoking and alcohol drinking), overweight, central obesity, or dyslipidemia.
