Abstract

Background: Drowning is a leading cause of mortality among children and adolescents globally and in Vietnam. According to the WHO Global Report on Drowning Prevention 2024, at least 3 million people have died from drowning over the past decade, with an estimated annual total exceeding 300,000 deaths, 43% of which occur among children under 14 years old. Objectives: To determine the levels of knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding drowning prevention among middle school students in Binh Thuy District, Can Tho City, and to identify associated factors. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 280 students from grades 6 to 9 currently enrolled at Tra An Middle School and Long Hoa Middle School, Binh Thuy District, Can Tho City. Results: The study recorded high rates of adequate attitudes (93.2%) and practices (62.5%) among students, but a low rate of adequate knowledge (35.7%). Grade level, swimming proficiency, school-based swimming lessons, and local drowning prevention communication were significantly associated with students' knowledge and practice (𝑝 < 0.05). Conclusions: The current status of attitudes and practices regarding drowning prevention among middle school students in Binh Thuy District is high. However, the level of knowledge in this group remains relatively low. Schools should collaborate with local authorities to organize extracurricular programs to enhance drowning prevention knowledge for students.
