Abstract

Background: Globba pendula Roxb. represents a highly promising medicinal plant for development, owing to growing evidence of its significant chemical constituents and biological activities. Objectives: Evaluation of the acute toxicity and anti-inflammatory activity of the total extract of Globba pendula Roxb. Materials and methods: Acute toxicity was assessed in mice based on the Behrens-Karber method. The in vitro anti-inflammatory activity was assessed through the inhibition of heat-induced albumin denaturation assay. In vivo anti-inflammatory efficacy was tested via carrageenan-induced paw edema in mice. Results: All mice in the experimental groups survived and exhibited no signs of toxicity, the LD50 value of the Globba pendula total extract could not be determined at oral doses up to 11,000 mg/Kg body weight. The IC50 values for the total extract and the reference drug, diclofenac, were 0.932 mg/ml and 0.0897 mg/ml, respectively. The Globba pendula extract group at a dose of 1,000 mg/Kg showed a relatively good level of inflammation reduction, especially from 24 to 72 hours. Conclusion: The total extract of Globba pendula Roxb. does not exhibit acute toxicity at an oral dose of 11,000 mg/Kg. The total extract of Globba pendula Roxb. exhibits concentration-dependent anti-inflammatory potential in vitro. At 1,000 mg/Kg, the total extract of Globba pendula Roxb. significantly suppressed paw edema induced by carrageenan.
