EFFICACY OF NON-SURGICAL PERIODONTAL TREATMENT COMBINED WITH BLUE-M GEL IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE

Abstract
Background: Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of the supporting tissues of the teeth, associated with various systemic and local factors, which diminishes the quality of life, particularly in patients with chronic kidney disease. In addition to mechanical debridement to remove bacteria and biofilms, non-surgical periodontal treatment may incorporate local antimicrobial agents such as Blue-M gel. Objectives: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of non-surgical periodontal treatment combined with Blue-M gel in patients with chronic kidney disease. Materials and methods: A randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted on 72 kidney disease patients with chronic kidney disease and periodontitis treated at Phu Nhuan General Hospital from June 2025 to February 2026. Patients were randomly allocated into two groups receiving non-surgical periodontal treatment with or without Blue-M gel. Data collected included age, sex, stage of chronic kidney disease, and periodontal parameters (PI, GI, mSBI, PPD, and CAL) assessed at baseline and 3 months after treatment. Results: After 3 months, clinical periodontal indices in both groups decreased significantly compared to baseline (p < 0.05). Notably, the Blue-M gel group exhibited significantly lower PPD, CAL, and mSBI scores than the control group (p < 0.05). The mean reductions in PPD, CAL, and mSBI were also significantly greater in the Blue-M gel group (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Non-surgical periodontal treatment combined with Blue-M gel yields superior efficacy compared to conventional non-surgical treatment alone. Blue-M gel serves as a safe and highly effective adjunctive therapy, particularly for patients with kidney disease.
