EFFECTIVENESS OF ACUPRESSURE MASSAGE, ELECTROACUPUNCTURE COMBINED, SHORTWAVE THERAPY AND V.PHONTE IN THE TREATMENT OF KNEE OSTEOARTHRITIS
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Knee osteoarthritis causes pain and limited of movement. Current treatment mainly focuses on symptom relief but has limitations, while prolonged medication use may cause adverse effects. Combining traditional medicine modalities with physical therapy may contribute to improving treatment outcomes. Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of acupressure massage, electroacupuncture, and shortwave therapy combined with V.phonte in reducing pain and improving knee joint function compared with electroacupuncture and shortwave therapy combined with V.phonte. Materials and methods: A controlled clinical intervention study with before-and-after treatment comparisons was conducted in 78 patients with primary knee osteoarthritis diagnosed according to the 1991 American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria, with 39 patients in each group. The study was conducted at the HCMC Hospital for Rehabilitation - Professional Diseases and Phu Lam Ward Health Station, Ho Chi Minh City, from April to December 2025. Results: After 10 days of treatment, the VAS score decreased from 5.38±0.54 to 1.21±0.57 in the intervention group and from 5.31±0.47 to 2.44±0.55 in the control group (p<0.05). The Lequesne index decreased from 13.56±2.95 to 5.96±3.56 in the intervention group and from 13.56±2.77 to 8.06±2.86 in the control group (p<0.05). The intervention group showed greater improvement in knee range of motion than the control group (p<0.05). Several traditional medicine symptoms improved after treatment in both groups, although no statistically significant differences were observed between the groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: Adding acupressure massage to electroacupuncture, shortwave therapy, and V.phonte resulted in greater pain reduction and improvement in knee joint function than the same regimen without acupressure massage.
