CLINICAL AND PARACLINICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF PATIENTS WITH SIGMOID COLON CANCER AT CAN THO UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY HOSPITAL

Abstract
Background: Colorectal cancer is one of the most common malignancies and a leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Among colonic cancers, sigmoid colon cancer is a frequent site, accounting for approximately 25-36% of cases. Diagnosis is based on clinical manifestations, imaging findings, and histopathology. Objective: To investigate the clinical and paraclinical characteristics of patients with sigmoid colon cancer at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital from 2024 to 2026. Materials and methods: A prospective descriptive caseseries study was conducted on 47 patients with sigmoid colon cancer treated at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital from April 2024 to January 2026. Results: The male-to-female ratio was 1.24:1. The mean age was 62.64 ± 11.65 years. Weight loss was observed in 36.17% of patients, anemia in 34.04%, and elevated CEA levels in 42.55%. Abdominal ultrasonography detected tumors in 40.43% of cases, including 4.26% with suspected metastatic lymph nodes. Colonoscopy revealed fungating lesions in 74.47% of patients. On computed tomography, tumors were located in the sigmoid colon in 87.23% and at the rectosigmoid junction in 12.77%; T3 lesions accounted for 42.55%. Preoperatively, adenocarcinoma was confirmed in 100% of cases, and stage III disease was recorded in 78.72%. Conclusion: Sigmoid colon cancer commonly occurs in older adults and is often diagnosed at an advanced stage. Hematochezia, abdominal pain, and weight loss are prominent clinical features at this stage.
