PREVALENCE OF OSTEOPOROSIS AND THE CORRELATION BETWEEN SERUM OSTEOCALCIN CONCENTRATION AND BONE MINERAL DENSITY IN ELDERLY PATIENTS

Abstract
Background: In Vietnam, studies on the correlation between bone mineral density and serum Osteocalcin levels, a marker for assessing bone quality, particularly among elderly patients, remain limited. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of osteoporosis and several related factors, and to evaluate the correlation between bone mineral density and Osteocalcin levels in elderly patients. Materials and methods: This study was conducted on 200 patients aged over 60 years at the Outpatient Department of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital from March 2024 to December 2025. Results: The prevalence of osteoporosis was 45.0%. Multivariable logistic regression analysis identified corticosteroid use, female sex, body mass index (BMI), and age at menopause as independent factors associated with the risk of osteoporosis. Patients with osteoporosis had significantly higher serum osteocalcin levels than those without osteoporosis (p < 0.001). Serum osteocalcin levels were negatively correlated with bone mineral density at the femoral neck and lumbar spine, with moderate correlation coefficients (r = −0.563 and r = −0.625). Conclusion: Corticosteroid use, female sex, body mass index (BMI), and age at menopause were independently associated with the risk of osteoporosis. Serum osteocalcin levels showed a moderate negative correlation with bone mineral density at the femoral neck and lumbar spine, with correlation coefficients of r = −0.563 and r = −0.625, respectively.
