Abstract

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a common chronic disease with rapidly increasing prevalence globally. Anemia is a frequent complication in these patients but is often overlooked, directly affecting quality of life and prognosis. Objectives: To determine the prevalence and characteristics of anemia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in 2024-2025; To explore some factors associated with anemia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in 20242025. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 191 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Demographic and laboratory data were collected from medical records. Anemia was diagnosed when Hb < 13 g/dL (male) and < 12 g/dL (female). Data were analyzed using SPSS software with Chi-square and Mann-Whitney tests. Results: The overall prevalence of anemia was 27.7% (53/191). Most cases were mild (75.5%), with normocytic and normochromic red blood cells. Anemia was associated with gender (p=0.006) and chronic kidney disease stage (p=0.001) in the univariate analysis. Multivariate analysis identified male gender as an independent factor associated with anemia (p<0.001). Patients with impaired renal function (stages 3a–5) had a 2.27-fold higher risk of anemia compared with those in stages 1–2. Liver enzyme levels were significantly lower in the anemic group than in the non-anemic group. No significant associations were found with age group or glycemic control. Conclusion: The prevalence of anemia in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients is considerably high. Impaired renal function and male gender are critical associated factors requiring attention in clinical practice.
