Abstract

Background: Maintaining treatment adherence plays a crucial role in the effective management of type 2 diabetes mellitus and in reducing the risk of long-term complications. Currently, patients’ treatment adherence is commonly assessed using the Summary of Diabetes SelfCare Activities (SDSCA) scale developed by Toobert et al., which consists of 17 items. Objectives: To investigate the treatment adherence rate according to the SDSCA scale and its association with selected factors among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at Bac Lieu General Hospital in 2025. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 390 outpatients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire, which included socio-demographic characteristics and information related to treatment adherence. Results: The overall rate of treatment adherence was 35.90%. The highest adherence rates were observed in medication use (88.21%) and nutrition (51.28%), while the lowest rates were found in blood glucose monitoring (22.82%) and physical activity (26.92%). Treatment adherence was significantly associated with age, marital status, educational level, duration of disease, and the number of comorbidities (p<0.05). Conclusion: Treatment adherence among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus remains limited (3%), particularly in the domains of physical activity (26.92%) and blood glucose monitoring (22.82%). The study identified significant associations between treatment adherence and age, marital status, educational level, duration of disease, and comorbidities. Therefore, strengthening health education, counseling, and appropriate supportive interventions is necessary to improve treatment adherence among patients.
