Abstract

Background: Herpes zoster is a dermatological condition characterized by the appearance of vesicular lesions along areas of skin innervated by sensory nerves, accompanied by pain. Many studies show that psychological factors can play a significant role in the progression and treatment outcome of the disease. The combination of He-Ne laser therapy, a topical treatment method combined with a treatment regimen, helps accelerate wound healing and reduce pain for patients. Objectives: To describe the clinical characteristics, anxiety levels, and evaluate the treatment outcomes of patients treated with He-Ne laser therapy for shingles. Materials and methods: A crosssectional descriptive study was conducted on 51 shingles patients at Can Tho Hospital of DermatoVenereology from May 2025 to October 2025. Results: The age group ≥ 60 accounted for 56.86%. The proportion of shingles patients was female (52.94%), higher than that of males (47.06%). The most common basic lesions were vesicles and bullae (96.08%), and erythema (90.2%). Anxiety was more prevalent in women than in men at all levels. Mild anxiety was most common in both sexes (29.41% in women; 23.53% in men). The majority of patients responded well to treatment (56.86%), with no anxiety after treatment (56.86%). The rate of mild anxiety also decreased to 37.25%, and only 5.89% of patients still experienced moderate anxiety. Conclusion: The age group ≥ 60 years predominated, reflecting the association between age and the risk of varicella zoster virus reactivation. The rate of anxiety in shingles patients was quite high, with mild anxiety accounting for 52.94% and only 33.33% having no anxiety. He-Ne laser therapy helps reduce pain, shorten healing time, improve mental well-being, and enhance overall treatment effectiveness for shingles patients.
