Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Non-communicable diseases have become a major burden in Vietnam, with cardiovascular diseases accounting for the highest proportion (39.5%). Hypertension (HTN) is a key risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and requires effective community control measures. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of hypertension and identify factors associated with hypertension among adults aged 18 years and older in Phong Dien District, Can Tho City, Vietnam, in 2025. Materials and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample size of 465 adults aged 18 years and olde. Results: The overall prevalence of hypertension was 24.3%, the prevalence increased significantly with age, reaching 57.1% in those over 70 years old, with this group having a 21.77 times higher risk compared to those under 25. Educational level was inversely related to hypertension prevalence, with the highest rate (41.7%), The prevalence of hypertension (HTN) was 31% among alcohol consumers, 36.6% among smokers, and 30% among those with high salt intake. Notably, individuals who did not consume fruit exhibited a higher HTN rate of 38.9% compared to other groups. Similarly, those consuming less than one serving of vegetables per day showed a higher prevalence of 38.5%. Finally, the HTN rate among obese individuals reached 42.4%, which was significantly higher than that of their counterparts. Conclusion: The overall prevalence of hypertension was 24.3%, which increased with age and was associated with low educational attainment, alcohol consumption, smoking, high salt intake, low fruit and vegetable consumption, and obesity. These findings highlight the need to strengthen hypertension prevention and control, particularly among high-risk groups.
