SURVEY OF THE STRUCTURE OF DRUGS INVENTORY AT CAN THO GENERAL HOSPITAL IN THE PERIOD OF 2017 – 2019 BY COMBINING ABC – XYZ ANALYSIS

Abstract
Background: There are still many shortcomings in inventory management in hospitals around the country. Objectives: The study combined 02 analytical techniques of ABC and XYZ to survey the inventory structure at Can Tho General Hospital in the period of 2017 - 2019 to propose solutions for improving inventory management at the hospitals. Materials and methods: The retrospective study of drug list and stock summary report and the analysis of drug inventory structure in the Pharmacy Department were performed by combining 02 techniques ABC and XYZ. Results: In the period of 2017 - 2019, the value of drugs used increased gradually (from 118,50 billion VND to 158,55 billion VND), the number of drugs used ranged from 1108 to 845 per year. The structure of drug classification used at the hospital according to ABC method had not changed significantly over the years. For 216 drugs used continuously for 03 years, group X accounted for 23.61% in quantity. The ABC - XYZ matrix results classified 04 drug groups with appropriate characteristics and inventory management projects. Conclusion: The study evaluated the pharmaceutical warehouse structure of Can Tho General Hospital in the period of 2017 - 2019 through the combination of 02 analysis methods ABC and XYZ to develop the new process for improving the effectiveness of inventory matching with drug groups in the ABC - XYZ matrix.
