STUDY ON CLINICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND EVALUATE TREATMENT RESULTS OF CORTICOID AND ANTIVIRAL DRUG FOR PATIENTS WITH BELL'S PALSY IN CAN THO CENTRAL GENERAL HOSPITAL AND CAN THO UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY HOSPITAL

Abstract
Background: Bell's palsy, also referred to as idiopathic facial nerve palsy or facial nerve palsy of suspected viral etiology. Inflammation and edema of the facial nerve likely play a role in pathogenesis and are the rationale for early treatment with corticoids, which improve the likelihood of recovery. Objectives: (1) To describe the clinical characteristics of patients with Bell's palsy; (2) To evaluate results of treatment with prednisolone and acyclovir for patients with Bell's palsy. Materials and methods: cross-sectional descriptive study in 80 patients with Bell's palsy. Results: Clinical characteristics: 100% frontal wrinkles absent; 100% disappearance of nasolabial folds; 87.5% Charllbers bell sign (+). Treatment result after 4 weeks: the rate of recovery in patients using prednisolone combined with acyclovir was 95% compared to the group using corticosteroids alone was 90%. However, this difference was not statistically significant with p > 0.05. Conclusion: The common clinical symptoms of patients with bell paralysis was loss of frontal wrinkles, disappearance of nasolabial folds, Charllers Bells sign. After 4 weeks of treatment, both groups had a very high rate of recovery. However, this difference was not statistically significant with p > 0.05.
