ADVERSE REACTIONS IN BLOOD DONORS AFTER WHOLE BLOOD DONATION: A STUDY ON 459 STUDENTS AT CAN THO UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY

Abstract
Background: Blood is one of the most precious gifts that someone could give to another. Most donors tolerate giving blood very well but occasionally adverse reactions may occur. Donors might refrain from donating again due to such reaction which will lead to shortage of blood supply. Objectives: The aim of this study was to estimate the frequency and type of adverse reactions, associated factors; to assess the results of first-aid procedures in students who have donated whole blood at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy from March 2019 to January 2020. Materials and methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study between March 2019 and January 2020. A total of 459 healthy donors were enrolled. Blood donors were asked to report if they suffered from any soon adverse consequences. Personal information and clinical manifestations were registered to a questionnaire. SPSS 18.0 software was employed for analysis. Results: Out of 459 blood donors, 39 (8.5%) experienced adverse reactions, 97.4% were mild. Age and repeated blood donations were factors associated with the appearance of adverse reactions. All of donors who experienced adverse reactions were treated and recovered within 1 hour. Conclusion: Age and repeated blood donations were factors associated with the appearance of adverse reactions. All of donors who experienced adverse reactions were treated and recovered within 1 hour.
