Abstract

Background: There are many types of wound from simple to complex, acute to chronic. Unhealable wounds are associated with histohypoxia, excessive exudate, and especially infection. The vacuum assisted closure therapy (VAC) was invented to solve those problems and has been used in many places over the world. In Vietnam, this method has been applied in some big centers and initially showed very encouraging results. However, in Can Tho, this is still a new issue that needs to be researched. Objectives: research clinical and paraclinical characteristics of the wound and the outcomes of applying vacuum assisted closure therapy in wound treatment at Can Tho Central General Hospital and Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in 2018-2020. Materials and methods: The patients with wounds were treated by vacuum assisted closure therapy. We noted some characteristics about patients, clinical and paraclinical characteristics of the wounds, the outcomes of treatment are classified by Falanga. Results: The average age 52 ± 15, The ratio of male/female was 34/16, 24 patients (48%) by trauma and surgery, 23 patients (46%) by abscess and infection, 90% acute wound, 40 patients (80%) wounds of the lower extremities, 7 patients (14%) wounds of the upper extremities and 3 patients (6%) wounds on body. 33 (66%) with purely soft tissue injuries, 17 patients (34%) with combined wounds. After using vacuum assisted closure therapy, the outcomes is 96% of good and 4% of bad, wound closure was achieved by spontaneous healing in small defects healing occurred in 18.75% cases, secondary wound suture in 35.42%  cases, skin graft in 33.33% cases, regional flap in 4.17% cases and 8.33% cases need free flap. Conclusion: Vacuum Assisted Closure Therapy is a simple, easy method to apply and has good outcomes. This is a mordern therapy to shorten wound healing time.
