DRUG INTERACTIONS OF THE ELDERLY INPATIENT AT GENERAL INTERNAL DEPARTMENT OF CAN THO UNIVERSITY MEDICINE AND PHARMACY HOSPITAL IN 2019

Abstract

Background: The combination of drugs in treatment is inevitable, especially in multiple diseases and multiple symptoms. This is the leading cause of occurrence of drug - drug interactions. Objectives: (1) Determine the rate & level of drug interactions in prescriptions for the elderly inpatients at General Internal Department of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital; (2) To identify clinically significant drug interactions and correlations between age, the number of used drugs, diseases with the drug interactions in prescriptions. Materials and methods: 420 medical records at General Internal Medicine Department of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital from 1st January to 31st December 2019. Using cross-sectional descriptive study method. Results: 32.6% of medical records had drug interactions, of which, the average interaction was 62.2%, and serious interactions were 26.7% and the list of 81 clinically significant drug interaction pairs was identified. The most commonly identified drug interaction pair was clopidogrel and proton pump inhibitor. The study also showed that the occurrence of drug interactions increased with increase in the age of patients and the number of drugs, multiple diseases prescribed (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Research results on drug interactions in hospitals are essential to help the hospital to correct drug use, to enhance the clinical pharmacy practice at the hospital, to reduce the risks and accidental side effects caused by drug interactions.
