ORAL HEALTH STATUS AND DENTAL TREATMENT NEEDS IN THE FIRST YEAR STUDENT AT CAN THO UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY IN 2019

Abstract
Background: Oral health problems and treatment needs among young people are increasingly concerned, but oral health in medical students has not been described. Objectives: to describe the oral health status and oral treatment needs in the first-year students. Materials and methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in 109 first-year students at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy, from August to December 2019. The information about age, gender, oral health, dental treatment needs, satisfaction with oral health, and the impact on oral health on daily activities were collected. Chi-square test, Fisher exact test, Student t-test and ANOVA were used to analyze the data. Results: 33.9% dental students, 28.4% medical students, 37.6% medical science students were joined this study. Males was more than females. The mean age was 19.29 ± 0.49. The percentage of dental caries, tooth loss, fillings in students was 48.6%, 9.2%, 23.9%. There was a significant difference in the incidence of dental caries in medical students (61.3%), bleeding gums in dental students (45.9%), the gingival bleeding index was higher in males than females (6.56 ± 9.12). and 3.44 ± 6.52). Oral health affected eating in 53.7% of medical science students. The highest demand for oral hygiene was 58.7%. Female students had higher orthodontic needs than males (19,1% and 4.9%). Conclusion: The finding indicated that the first-year students of the university have different oral health status, but there was no difference in dental treatment needs.
