STUDY ON CLINICALLY SIGNIFICANT DRUG INTERACTIONS AND RELATED FACTORS IN OUTPATIENT PRESCRIPTION AT ONE CITY MEDICAL CENTER OF HAU GIANG PROVINCE IN 2019 - 2020

Abstract
Background: Clinically significant drug interaction is a drug interaction that results in a change in the therapeutic effect and/or toxicity of a drug to the extent that a dose adjustment or other medical intervention is required. Objectives: (1) Determining the rate and extent of clinically significant drug interactions based on three drug interaction databases; (2) Exploring factors related to the use of drugs that may cause clinically significant drug-drug interactions in outpatient prescriptions at one City Medical Center of Hau Giang province in 2019-2020. Materials and methods: Conducting a cross-sectional descriptive study of over 400 outpatient prescriptions for 3 months at the general clinic at one City Medical Center of Hau Giang province. Data is collected from prescriptions. Evaluating drug interactions by using three drug interaction lookup softwares: Drugs.com, medscape and IBM micromidex. Results: The rate of clinically significant drug interactions of prescriptions with 2-4 drugs, 5-7 drugs, and 8-12 drugs were 14.09%, 33.91%, and 100%, respectively. There was a relationship between the number of clinically significant drug interactions with the amount of drug used in the prescription (p = 0.027). Conclusion: The rate of clinically significant drug interactions occurring in outpatient prescriptions increased along with the amount of drugs used in prescriptions, in other words, there was a statistically relationship (p < 0.05) between the quantity of outpatient prescriptions and the likelihood of drug interactions.
