Abstract

Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic disease. It is generally characterized by irreversible and structural damage of the sacroiliac and spinal joints, and finally, progressive spinal ankylosis due to new bone formation. Clinical presentations of these patients include chronic back pain, morning stiffness, and loss of spinal mobility. Because ankylosing spondylitis can make patients disabled very early, the treatment is neccessarry. In addition to the conventional synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (csDMARDs) such as sulfasalazine, methotrexate, and hydroxychloroquine, some biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs), mainly tumor necrosis factor inhibitors and interleukin-17 inhibitors, play a role in limiting the destruction of joints and improving patients’ quality of life. In this article, we update the latest recommendations of the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) and the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) in the clinical practice and management of patients with ankylosing spondylitis during SARS-COV-2.
